Most people know the Ponychütchen label for its sugar-sweet bath products in cupcake form. But it also stocks great mineral make-up products that are fragrance- and preservative-free. On the online store www.ponyhuetchen.ch there is a corresponding note behind every vegan product. If you don’t like buying cosmetics without having applied them first, you have the option of having tester sizes of the unpressed products sent to your home by post. My favorites include the olive-gold eyeshadow “Mermaid’s Fin”, the eyeshadow “Dark Chocolate” and the blush in the color “Rosewood”.

Going vegan in Hamburg

I started my shopping tour in Hamburg city center with a visit to Naturkosmetikparadies. I could spend hours in the ALIQUA store, which is integrated into the Budnikovski drugstore. I tried out fine creams, beguilingly fragrant body oils and natural lipstick colors on my arms and hands until I could no longer find a free patch of skin. In addition to well-known brands such as “Lavera” and “Dr. Hauschka”, the Aliqua Shop also offers an exciting selection of young brands such as “The Organic Pharmacy” and “i+m”. The following products made it into my bag: The NuStyle organic hairspray and the NuStyle organic detangler from AUBREY ORGANICS. Both products are provided with a vegan label. Then a decorative scented candle from MUNIO CANDELA. The special thing about these candles is that they are made from soy wax, have a cotton-wood wick and are poured into recycled glass.

My next stop was at the “Bären-Treff” fruit gum store on Mönckebergstrasse. There are two vegan varieties, the gummy hearts are even organic, gluten- and lactose-free and taste delicious. But beware, danger of addiction!

Now onto the long row. Fairy food”, a 100% vegan snack bar, recently opened there. I treated myself to a green smoothie with pineapple and a corn wrap filled with salad and avocado for lunch. For dessert, a macha green tea wedge. The food is freshly prepared and the service is very friendly. Unfortunately, the ambience is not exactly super cozy, as it is rather cramped and decorated in a cool shade of green. But there is also the take away option.

In the afternoon I searched in vain for the vegan store “bevegend” in the St. Pauli district. The rather small Balduinenstrasse was not marked on my map. So unfortunately I can’t write a report about it, but I’ll list the address below anyway.

Last but not least, I treated myself to a macchiato with soy milk at Balzac Coffee.

Feed your skin – but only with the best!

The selection of fragrant and effective natural products to combat the smell of sweat is not exactly huge. This is despite the fact that it is widely known that the chemicals aluminum and petroleum are linked to Alzheimer’s disease and breast cancer. So I am all the more pleased with my discovery of the deodorant cream from Soapwalla. At the Soapwalla Kitchen in Brooklyn, cosmetic products are made from purely organic, vegan foods. True to the motto “feed your skin”.

Ingredients such as finely ground, dried vegetables, lavender, peppermint and tea tree oil help to absorb moisture, repel bacteria and provide long-lasting freshness. Compatible for all skin types. The wonderful fragrance suits both men and women.

The cream melts gently on the skin and after a short application time, it leaves no traces on clothing. I have already tested it for 7 days and found it to be perhaps the best deodorant in the world!

Milk on the skin – dandruff on the eyes

Unfortunately, the cosmetics industry relies heavily on animal resources. Bone meal is found in every conventional soap. Anti-wrinkle creams advertise with collagen which is obtained from the connective tissue of calves. Fish scales are often used for mica eyeshadows. Most mascaras contain beeswax. Body lotions promise to nourish the skin thanks to cow’s milk. The keratin trend in hair care products is also at the expense of the animals. The protein is made from ground horns, hooves, feathers, quills and hair from various animals.

So do vegans have to give up make-up and body care rituals? No, fortunately not! There are more and more alternatives. If the vegan flower of the Vegan Society is to be found on the packaging, this guarantees that both the product and its manufacture are free from animal ingredients and animal testing. However, products without this logo may also be produced without animal ingredients. If you want to be on the safe side and check labels, you can find a list of the most common animal ingredients on the website of the animal rights organization PeTA:

LUSH does not use microplastics in any of its products – but they still keep their sparkle!

At the end of January 2013, LUSH Fresh Handmade Cosmetics announced its decision to remove all microplastics (plastic glitter) from its products. This decision was celebrated by environmental organizations and groups for the protection and preservation of the oceans, namely the Marine Conservation Society and Surfers Against Sewage.

Hilary Jones, Ethics Manager at LUSH says: “LUSH is known for its bubbly bath products and cosmetics. But some of the glitter and sparkle in the products is due to microplastic glitter. A few years ago, LUSH began replacing this plastic glitter with new alternatives due to concerns about the spread of microplastics in the environment. Research has evolved and so LUSH can continue to sparkle without polluting the environment.

LUSH has remained exciting and fun, even as they have removed the glitter in the bath balls with edible shimmer, rice paper confetti, popping sugar, sugar decorations and even by creating their own confetti from dehydrated melons that LUSH blends with their in-house palm oil-free soap base.

LUSH is pleased to work with Surfers Against Sewage and the Marine Conservation Society, particularly on plastic pollution and beach clean-up projects, as well as public awareness campaigns. Her tireless commitment has inspired LUSH to quickly find alternatives to glitter for the latest challenging products.

Over 50% of the glitter was used in three long-standing bestsellers, so LUSH had to ensure they found worthy replacements to avoid disappointing loyal customers.

With glitter now agar-based and other eco-friendly, biodegradable alternatives coming to market, LUSH is very happy to finally announce that it will now be possible to remove all plastic glitter from products in the very near future without sacrificing fun, sparkle and pop. The result will please customers and environmentalists alike.”

LUSH’s decision to dispense with plastic glitter is forward-looking and a pioneering move for other companies.
