Eating vegan in Yucatan/Mexico.

After three weeks’ vacation on the Yucatan Peninsula, our mouths are watering when we think back to the food. We were impressed by the culinary variety and the many hot sauces made us addicted.

The gastronomic landscape is sparsely populated with purely vegan restaurants. Nevertheless, we can recommend Yucatan to anyone who swears by purely plant-based dishes, as there are many different basic ingredients such as corn, rice, beans, vegetables and fruit that even non-vegan restaurants can prepare on request. In addition to trendy and upmarket restaurants, which in some places are reminiscent of Zurich prices, you can eat in simple eateries or create your own picnic with little effort.

Watch out for the cheese trap: Mexican dishes and finger foods such as tacos, burritos and tortillas are often prepared with cheese. Even if you order the vegetable option with rice or beans, as a vegan you have to explicitly point out each time that you don’t want any cheese.

Raw Love in Tulum Beach

Every vegan knows the frying pan problem. You order a vegan dish in a restaurant that also offers animal dishes and the roasted vegetables taste like chicken. In Raw Love, this is an impossibility. All dishes are prepared raw and there is not a single animal dish on the menu. We particularly felt the love of the professional chefs when preparing the raw cakes. The food is served in a very relaxed atmosphere between palm trees, fine sand and hammocks. There is a second Raw Love branch in Tulum Downtown, but we didn’t visit it.

Mango y Chile in Bacalar

We ate fantastic tasting burgers at Mango y Chile, which is also a purely vegan restaurant. The crispy, airy patty was soaked in the flavor of the ingredients. Every bite was a succulent eating pleasure. From the terrace of the restaurant you can enjoy a wonderful view of the Bacalar lagoon. A small town that is not as well-known as hip Tulum, but is definitely worth a visit.

Naay on the island of Holbox

We enjoyed the tastiest salad on the beautiful island of Holbox. In the spartanly furnished Naay, you can put together your salads according to a modular system. First you choose three vegetables as basic ingredients, followed by a protein source such as lentils, one of five vegan salad dressings, a grain and a topping such as sesame or sunflower seeds. All in all, you can put together about 1 million different salads. We dined there three times and applauded the chefs each time. Incidentally, Naay was also one of the few restaurants where we found tofu on the menu.

Do-it-yourself restaurant

When we were traveling by car, we enjoyed small picnics. Our homemade tortillas with fresh vegetables, spicy salsa, bean puree and hummus tasted great. And what could be better for dessert than fruit picked just around the corner?

No name restaurants

You can eat very cheaply and ok to good in the many simple restaurants and food stalls. You can’t expect sophisticated cuisine, but you can expect solid home cooking and a lot of goodwill. Although there is rarely a vegan dish on the menu, the hosts are extremely flexible when it comes to “special requests”.

Screenshot 2016-01-18 at 17.20.50

In July 2015, the lavera Showfloor took place for the 6th time as part of the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in Berlin. One highlight of the past year was the presentation of an award. With the “lavera Green Fashion Award”, lavera Naturkosmetik aims to promote the production of environmentally friendly clothing and thus the topic of sustainability. In addition to ecologically correct materials, it is also about the manufacturing conditions under which the clothing is produced. This must be ethically justifiable and produced under socially acceptable working conditions. Fashion designers and fashion design students can take part in the award, and a jury with expertise in the fields of fashion and sustainability will select three finalists from all the applicants, who will present their collection on the show floor in summer 2015 and face the jury’s verdict once again. The winner will receive prize money to create and produce their own collection, which will be presented on the lavera showfloor in January 2016.

BANKET WITHOUT LABEL by Anja Baggenstos

On June 29, in Sarnen, four courses were cooked fresh from the garbage to celebrate Anja Baggensto’s master’s thesis.

She called her project “Banquet without etiquette” and completed her Master’s degree in Fine Arts at the Lucerne School of Art with this work.

Just two weeks before that, Good food for you for free was still in full swing as a bachelor’s thesis for the Fine Arts course at the Zurich University of the Arts, which we reported on here.

When Anja heard about our work a month earlier, she sent us an invitation to the banquet without etiquette:

We made our way to Sarnen to enjoy a fantastic meal, fresh from the garbage.

For starters, guests could choose between apple celery asparagus and mushroom soup.

All three were delicious.

The second course was this colorful, delicious salad:

salta_banquet

The main course was a perfectly spiced vegetable curry, which was accompanied by an opening speech by Rahel Grunder.

Rahel studies together with Anja in the same degree program.

At my request, I have just received the entire speech she gave that evening!

Music from the trash:

The “Güsel Orchestra” was the highlight of the evening and played for us after the first three courses, you can find a short video clip of the performance here.

(Video lasts 1 minute, from second 35 it gets really cool!)

…Afterwards we had a very tasty dessert:

Apple cake with vanilla sauce served with rhubarb compote and the finest selected berries.

This was accompanied by a Knoppers triangle & apricot lentil slices,

This little masterpiece was served on real bathroom tiles!

If you feel like reliving all the impressions of the evening on video, you’ll find them here.

By the way, there is now the Tash Wiki, where you can enter your secret places of discarded food or find some, here is the link.

Going vegan in Hamburg

I started my shopping tour in Hamburg city center with a visit to Naturkosmetikparadies. I could spend hours in the ALIQUA store, which is integrated into the Budnikovski drugstore. I tried out fine creams, beguilingly fragrant body oils and natural lipstick colors on my arms and hands until I could no longer find a free patch of skin. In addition to well-known brands such as “Lavera” and “Dr. Hauschka”, the Aliqua Shop also offers an exciting selection of young brands such as “The Organic Pharmacy” and “i+m”. The following products made it into my bag: The NuStyle organic hairspray and the NuStyle organic detangler from AUBREY ORGANICS. Both products are provided with a vegan label. Then a decorative scented candle from MUNIO CANDELA. The special thing about these candles is that they are made from soy wax, have a cotton-wood wick and are poured into recycled glass.

My next stop was at the “Bären-Treff” fruit gum store on Mönckebergstrasse. There are two vegan varieties, the gummy hearts are even organic, gluten- and lactose-free and taste delicious. But beware, danger of addiction!

Now onto the long row. Fairy food”, a 100% vegan snack bar, recently opened there. I treated myself to a green smoothie with pineapple and a corn wrap filled with salad and avocado for lunch. For dessert, a macha green tea wedge. The food is freshly prepared and the service is very friendly. Unfortunately, the ambience is not exactly super cozy, as it is rather cramped and decorated in a cool shade of green. But there is also the take away option.

In the afternoon I searched in vain for the vegan store “bevegend” in the St. Pauli district. The rather small Balduinenstrasse was not marked on my map. So unfortunately I can’t write a report about it, but I’ll list the address below anyway.

Last but not least, I treated myself to a macchiato with soy milk at Balzac Coffee.

Aliqua Shop at Budnikovski, Europapassge, Bergstrasse 16, 20095 Hamburg

Bären Treff fruit gum store, Mönckebergstrasse 19, 20095 Hamburg

Fairy Food Imbiss, Lange Reihe 47, 20099 Hamburg

Bevegend Laden, Balduinstrasse 24, 20359 Hamburg-St. Pauli

Balzac Coffee can be found all over the city, very similar to Starbucks

Vegan Travel In Paris

A five-day art city trip in Paris took us to some real vegan gourmet places! On the first evening we went to le potager du marais, where everything is now strictly vegan and organic. The whole atmosphere was a bit “copper, wool, bast”, but the restaurant was still packed and it tasted delicious! The next day we went to brunch at Soya, which for us is now clearly the best “V-address in town” – the buffet is unbeatable and very reasonably priced, top quality. It was so great that we came back for lunch the next day and ordered a starter, main course and dessert with soy cappuccino – we were in bliss at the push of a button in this soy restaurant – definitely our favorite place in Paris.
