Go for the nice meatballs: vegan kitchen at the first Veganmania in Switzerland

Mobility vans not only like diesel, but also vegan food. Our red vehicle certainly didn’t spit out the wholemeal spelt rolls, tofu sprout fit and seitan onion burgers. Neither does the small but mighty vegan kitchen team. And so we drove to Winterthur. The first Veganmania in Switzerland took place there on Saturday, September 22. About time. The event has been delighting the Austrian population since 1997.

When we arrived at Neumarkt in Winterthur, the first raindrops were falling, so we didn’t set up the stand and tent very comfortably. Shortly after 10 o’clock it was sizzling and frying. The first homemade vegan burger with colorful fries (a mix between Hördöpfel and Rüeblis) was sold and it was not to be the last. According to unconfirmed eyewitness reports, the queue was longer than at the McDonalds nearby.

Sigi, Anita and I worked as if we were in a small vegan kitchen factory on the assembly line. Fortunately, Marcel took over the cash register and took orders. At this point, a big thank you to my three vegan kitchen helpers: Sigi, Anita and Marcel, you are the best!

We were already sold out by 3 p.m.: 250 vegan burgers with sunflower remoulade, soy cream cheese, organic ketchup, onions, gherkins and tomatoes found their way into the bellies. We could probably have sold 750 vegan burgers. However, I calculated carefully when shopping because I recently watched “Taste the Waste”. Our Schoggimaronni bundt cake lasted almost until the end

The mood among the Veganmania exhibitors was good. I think the many visitors liked it too. Despite the chilly wet weather, a number of vegan organic glacés from “The Green Fairy” were served(interview). There must be something about vegan food…

Kind regards

Lauren

Sigi and Anita. Two out of three love vegan kitchen helpers. Thank you!

Photo evidence that it was raining and the vegan burgers were actually eaten;-)

“Next, please.”

Is your life too plastic?

The first of three movie nights took place yesterday at Jenseits im Viadukt. The evening was dedicated to the Refiller organization, a young and motivated community from Bern that is committed to reducing waste and using reusable materials. After a short introduction by Stefanie Derungs, founder of the Refiller Mibe, the movie “Bag it” started. This deals with the omnipresent, but far too little considered, waste problem caused by plastic products such as shopping bags, most of which cannot be recycled. The numerous guests fell silent as soon as the movie started, and from the very beginning all the attention belonged to Jeb Berrier, who accompanies the viewer through the entire film. Only occasionally could you hear the rustling of the “Vegankitchen Dinner Bag”, in which every visitor had received a snack for the movie and was now eating it with relish. The aim of the Refiller to sensitize society to the sensitive issue of disposable attitudes was definitely successful. My first step towards becoming a better person: no more disposable cups and plastic bags!

The top of the food mountain

The documentary “Taste the Waste” by Valentin Thurn mercilessly shows how our society is increasingly becoming a throwaway society and treats food as if it were a luxury item. The film, which is made from a very objective point of view, holds up a mirror to us consumers by asking a simple question: How is it that half of all food in Central Europe is thrown away?

Thurn’s film avoids pointing fingers and calmly depicts the disturbing waste of food in the westernized world. Thurn has skillfully assembled a multi-layered documentary from many short interview episodes and snapshots. Absolutely worth seeing!

Waste causes considerable damage to the health of grazing animals!

It’s not just dog excrement that is left on the meadows. Beverage cans and other waste are increasingly causing problems. Cows have also died in this way or had to be euthanized due to waste-related incidents. This problem has led to the existence of boards with the title “Waste kills animals”. These warning notices are placed in a specific location for a very limited period of time, i.e. one to a maximum of two weeks. They then change location. Such warning signs are intended to make walkers aware of the basic problem associated with grazing animals near the city. Today I discovered such a board during my jogging tour in Unteraffoltern, Zurich.

Vegan barbecue party Part II

Yesterday, in glorious sunshine, the barbecue was fired up for the second time this year from 14:00 and the buffet was laid out, with many souvenirs from the numerous guests. I owe my absolute taste sensation to Beatrice Gantner, who gave me a slice of her delicious banana-almond-date cake and thus gave me the perfect culinary finale. Thanks to everyone for the delicious vegan food and for the nice company.

This is the new advertising campaign of the restaurant, café and bar “Le Muh” in Oerlikon. I don’t know what they got wrong, but you work because you have chosen a job and you like doing it and feel good about it. Well, do these four “employees” feel so good? Hardly…

Fit with parsley

If your eyes obey gravity this morning and you feel like you’ve lost a boxing match, then you’re like me…

Patty’s Tip:

Hollow out a few leaves of parsley from your herb box and everything will be fine. As a compress, the spicy herb is an ideal eyelid lifter and has a decongestant effect.

Ingredients:

  • 2 teaspoons fresh parsley
  • 1 cup of water

Preparation:

Put the parsley in a heatproof bowl, bring the water to the boil and pour over the parsley. Leave the infusion to cool for at least 15 minutes, then filter.

Application:

Soak 2 cotton balls in the infusion and place on the eyes. A good opportunity to crawl back into bed for another 15 minutes. You should give the parsley enough time to soothe your eyes and reduce the swelling of your eyelids.
